What is BlinkCode?

BlinkCode — the app that reads fault codes directly from your dashboard — no cables, no scanners, just your phone.
BlinkCode is a diagnostic tool that uses your phone's camera to decode engine fault codes on most 1980s–1990s vehicles with OBD1-type systems (pre-OBD2). It reads and analyzes the blinking pattern of the check engine light to display error codes.

What makes BlinkCode unique is its focus on OBD1 vehicles. While nearly all other fault code apps are designed for modern OBD2 systems, BlinkCode is made for the forgotten era of the 1980s and 1990s — when fault codes were blinked out through the dashboard light.

How to Use

  1. Set your car's ECU into fault code reading mode (for example, by shorting two pins in the diagnostic connector using a paperclip or a bit of wire).
    The check engine light in your dashboard will now start blinking in a sequence, cycling through all stored fault codes and repeating the sequence indefinitely.
    🔧 Tip: Check your workshop manual or online forums to identify the correct pins for your specific vehicle.
  2. Choose the correct OBD1 system from the dropdown menu in the app (e.g. GM, Toyota, Ford).
  3. Aim your phone camera closely at the blinking check engine light.
  4. Tap the Start button.
    📵 Android does not support live UI updates during detection — codes will appear after pressing "Show Codes".
  5. Allow the app to observe a few blink cycles (around 2–3 minutes).
  6. When you're ready, press "Show Codes" to display the results.
    ⚠️ Note: Pressing "Show Codes" stops live detection and may disrupt ongoing counting.
  7. Detected fault codes will appear on screen.
  8. Green codes (like 12 or 55) indicate normal ECU startup or end-of-sequence — they are not faults.
    You can adjust or add green codes in the car brand settings if needed.
  9. Use the Brightness slider if blinks aren't detected correctly.
  10. Tap Save to store the codes for later reference.

Saved Code List

Saved codes show nicely in the list, sorted by date. You can also export the codelist as a .txt file for archiving or sharing.

OBD1 Car Types & Decoding Settings

BlinkCode supports multiple types of OBD1 cars across regions. Choose your car’s system in the dropdown, and the app will adjust decoding logic, blink timing, and code format automatically.
In most cases, you won’t need to change the timing sliders — just select the correct brand and start scanning.

Each preset includes timing, number of digits (2 or 3), and known green codes. You can also define your own Custom Car settings if your vehicle has special timing requirements.

2-Digit vs 3-Digit Code Formats

BlinkCode supports both 2-digit and 3-digit OBD1 fault code systems, depending on the brand and year of your vehicle:

The app automatically counts and displays the code format selected — no need to worry about misreading the light. For Ford users, make sure to choose the correct 2-digit or 3-digit variant in the dropdown menu.

Troubleshooting Tips

BlinkCode relies on a clear threshold between the lamp being fully on and off. To ensure accurate reading:

If you see 12*³ repeated, that's great — it confirms the ECU has completed a full code loop.

♻️ If you scan for longer than needed, you’ll simply get repeated results. That’s totally fine and looks like this:
